Importance Of Performance Measures for ARX Emergency Ambulance Services



The Emergency medical service’s performance measures at ARX give our services an additional tool to gauge and report various aspects of our EMS system including the environment in which EMS responds, the performance of our emergency medical service (EMS), and the overall performance of our local systems.

Measuring quality in ARX EMS systems is challenging. Measuring quality in EMS is important since EMS is the practice of medicine in the pre-hospital setting. The goal of aRX EMS Performance Measurement (EMSPM) is to apply knowledge, data, and experience to evaluate and improve our EMS service delivery, personnel performance, and clinical care. The need for increased coordination of inpatient care and higher quality care at lower costs has made it essential for ARX EMS to have in-place quality control or quality improvement programs that rely on key performance indicators to continuously monitor the system’s overall performance and effectiveness of the different prehospital interventions.

aRX ambulance services are increasingly providing front‐line care for a wide range of patients with emergency and urgent conditions, which in the past were the domain of primary care or emergency departments (ED). The widening scope of practice of ambulance services and clinicians means that reliance on conventional measures of ambulance care, such as response times, does not adequately represent the range of patient conditions or different types of clinical management in the pre‐hospital environment and is inadequate for measuring service performance and quality.
